Let’s cut to the chase – being a freelancer isn’t for everyone. Whether you’re a writer or a photographer, the freelance hustle is a whole different kind of hustle. Every career has it’s pros and cons, and being a freelancer can certainly be rewarding if you do it right. It’s a lot of hard work and a constant need to network and generate business. Aside from being good at what you do, there are a few things to keep in mind when considering a freelance life that can make or break you. Check out some of these habits of highly effective freelancers.
Get an Early Start
You know what they say – “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise,” and “the early bird gets the worm.” I guess these guys are on to something with getting an early start to the day. For me personally, I feel most productive early in the morning right after I make a cup of coffee. For one, I feel like I can get so much more accomplished when I get my day started at 7am, and opposed to getting it started at 10am. This is a huge struggle with freelancers – a lot of them lack the discipline to stick to a strict schedule.
Never Stop Looking for Work
Never get comfortable with the clients you have now. It’s very important to always be looking for new work and new opportunities. You never know if/when a project is going to end which could potentially put you in a difficult position if you don’t currently have any other work or income. Constantly pitch yourself, your work and/or your services.
Have a Work Space
It doesn’t matter where this is or how big/small the room is. Find a space to work, where you will have no distractions and you can be completely productive. This space should be designated just for working. If it’s a closet or an office space, find the best possible location where you will generate business and get your work done efficiently.
Networking
Money and business does not just appear by luck. It is earned by hitting the pavement and putting yourself out there. This concept is called networking and every freelancer needs to do it. Whether you network on the internet or attend business networking events, you must learn how to expand your professional networking if you want to be successful.
Have a Life Outside of Work
Most importantly – have a life! If you’re working too much, you’re bound to driving yourself crazy. Get outside during the day and go for a walk, go to the gym, go to the park, do something that isn’t work related that will clear your head! Even go out for drinks with your friends – just have a life outside of working. Balance is key – especially when you’re a freelancer!
