Give More of Yourself and Watch Your Life Become Happier
Have you ever wondered how you can become happier? Most of us have. It’s common for people to chase after bigger paychecks, fancier houses, and faster cars in an attempt to find more happiness in life. However, the real path to happiness doesn’t have anything to do with your income or your possessions – it has to do with how much you help other people. The surest way to find more contentment and joy in your life is to give of yourself. You can improve your quality of life by following these guidelines to help others more.
Take the initiative.
Decide for yourself how you want to help other people, and then go out looking for opportunities to make it happen. Don’t just wait for people to ask you to help out. If someone asks you to donate to a cause you know nothing about, or pressures you into volunteering for something when you had other plans, you might feel annoyed or resentful – and that’s not a productive mindset for helping others. To prevent this from happening, figure out what matters most to you, and put your efforts towards that cause with a willing heart.
Use your skills.
When you put your unique skills and talents to good use, you’ll get the most joy out of your volunteer work, and you’ll help other people the most, too. On the other hand, volunteer work that you don’t like or aren’t good at will just leave you feeling drained and frustrated. Make a meaningful contribution by searching for a position that suits you.
Know that time matters more than money.
You don’t have to be wealthy to help other people. Your time is worth much more than your money, and we’ve all got some time to give. Whether you’re feeding people at a soup kitchen, spending time with a child through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, or teaching English to adult immigrants, human interaction is the cornerstone of volunteering.
Be selective about where you donate.
Giving to others doesn’t have to involve donating money, but if you do want to donate, be selective about the organizations you give to. It’s best to donate to organizations that are transparent about what they do with your money – that will help you feel like you’re making a difference in somebody else’s life.
In Closing
If you want to feel happier on a day-to-day basis, have a stronger sense of purpose in your life, and feel more connected to other people, giving to others is the way to go. Whether you choose to volunteer on a weekly basis or just a few times a year, your contribution will improve your life as well as other people’s.
